Come and discover the mangroves of Genipa Bay in Martinique and enjoy an informative and entertaining guided tour!
Departing from the village of TROIS-ÎLETS, you will board Le Mantou, a small shuttle boat with a dozen seats for small groups.
They will take you on an exciting and entertaining tour where you will learn everything there is to know about this bay, its geography, history, fauna, and flora.
For example, on the way to the mangrove, you will pass by the three islets that gave the commune of TROIS-ÎLETS its name: ÎLET CHARLES, ÎLET THEBLOUX, and ÎLET SIXTAIN, named after the last lime kiln owners of these islets.
The mangrove swamp in Génipa Bay is the largest mangrove swamp in Martinique. It covers almost two-thirds of the island’s 1,800 hectares of mangrove swamp (6% of its wooded areas!).
Once you reach the shores of the town of DUCOS, you will venture into the heart of the MANGROVE by taking the CANAL COCOTTE or the CANAL de RIVIERE-SALEE.
Here again, as you travel along the canal at a slow speed, your guide will teach you how to distinguish between the different mangrove trees (red, black, white, and gray), their characteristics, their peculiarities, their sometimes spectacular modes of reproduction (the red mangrove is viviparous), and their modes of colonization of shallow waters, which make these tree species the true kings of the mangrove. The guide will also detail the immense variety of mangrove fauna: crabs (touloulou, spider crabs, etc.), crustaceans, insects (you can see impressive termite mounds), as well as numerous birds (herons, egrets, etc.).
To conclude this half-day tour on a lighter note, your guide will take you to Petit ÎLET (or ÎLET Robinson) for a well-deserved refreshment break. Choose from local fruit juices, homemade platters, or even a “special” punch—something for everyone!
But before you sit down at the table, the guide will show you a few more plant species, their history, and their uses in everyday life, in meals, and even their medicinal properties. They will also show you some vestiges of the past presence of the Caribbean natives! A magical moment for everyone, young and old alike, that takes you on a journey through time and allows you to discover the richness of part of Martinique’s ecosystem through commentary that is as passionate as it is well-informed.
